What’s Behind the Numbers

On 19th December of 2018, Tajik Family Planning Association with the help of United Nations Population Fund in Tajikistan organized a round table within the framework of “Beyond the Numbers” initiative. This approach is implementing in the context of ongoing reforms in the health sector of the Republic of Tajikistan.
This program was adapted with the support of UNFPA for the first time and approved by order of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population in 2008. The main objective of the “Beyond the Numbers” program is to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. This mechanism includes an audit of maternal mortality at the national level and analysis of near miss cases at the maternity hospital level. Today, 36 maternity houses of the country are implementing the Near Miss Case Analysis (NMCA). In light of the implementation of this mechanism, about 60 local protocols at the facility level have been developed which aim at improving the quality of emergency obstetric care. The event was held with the participation of national program coordinators of all regions to discuss achievements, lessons learned, difficulties and perspectives within the framework of this program. One of the main achievements noted is that with the introduction of the NMCA postpartum hemorrhage, hypotonic hemorrhage and hysterectomy were reduced. As a result of this round table national coordinators will develop an Action Plan to further strengthen the “Beyond the Numbers” initiative.
